2020 New Year Newsletter

Message from the President, Linda Murphy

A Brief Recap of 2019:

We had a very busy and exciting 2019, which started with our membership drive.  In May, the community celebrated our 55th Annual BBQ Fundraiser.  We had a great turnout from the community and served nearly 700 plates of good tasting BBQ.  We appreciate the efforts of everyone, and because of you, this event and our volunteer fire department are very successful!

The National Night Out and Fall Festival EventsBoth events were huge successes!  During National Night Out, firefighters provided tours around the station, grilled hot dogs and burgers, and provided firefighting demonstrations and an art contest for the kids. Many thanks to all of our neighbors who were able to join us for National Night Out.  A BIG thanks to some of our local law enforcement, DPS Troopers, Precinct 1 Constable, Sheriff’s Deputies, and K9 Leo for hanging out with us. It was a fun time for everyone!

Fall Festival Event: In celebration of the fall season, many from the surrounding area came out to support our 3rd Annual Fall Festival.  Families enjoyed the hayrides, arts, crafts, and face painting activities.  The most popular games this year were bubbles, gone fishing, and the bounce house.

Community Christmas Party: The year ended with many of our friends, neighbors, and guests attending the annual Mico Community Christmas Party.  A BIG thank you to all the volunteers that helped to make all Mico VFD events a great success!

By-Laws:  The Mico VFD Bylaws were updated and posted on our website. Copies are available for pickup at the fire station (7121 County Road 271).  Thank you to the community volunteers and firefighters for providing input. We couldn’t have done this update without you.

New Board Members: Mico VFD Board extends a hearty welcome to our new Vice President, Destiny Phelps, Secretary, Kelly Hall, and Treasurer, Jenny Ferren.  They come to us with dedicated hearts and new ideas for the fire department and our surrounding communities. We’re excited to have them on the team – welcome aboard!

What’s Ahead in 2020:

Annual Membership Drive:  January is our membership drive for the Mico Volunteer Fire Department (Mico VFD).  Mico VFD covers approximately 70 square miles of Medina County. Our brave firefighters answer emergency calls to subdivisions on 1283 and properties on both sides of Medina Lake.  Several months ago, they answered the call to put out a brush fire in the Ranchland Oaks subdivision. Mico VFDs quick response prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes. I want to extend my thanks and appreciation for their bravery and hard work in keeping our community safe.  Please consider becoming a member of the fire department during our annual membership drive. Your donation will help fund firefighter training, buy equipment, and other department necessities. A membership form is enclosed with this newsletter. Remember, the online option is also available to register as a member.

Annual BBQ Fundraiser Meeting:  Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 16th, at 12-noon – Mico VFD conference room.  We need help to plan our 56th Annual BBQ event!  The BBQ event is a significant source of funding for our fire department. It is an opportunity to bring the community together for a time of fellowship and to enjoy great tasting food and participate in fun activities.  We welcome new ideas and suggestions with planning this big event – so come to the meeting! Those interested in donating items or helping with any part of the celebration, please send an e-mail to Destiny Phelps at micovfd.vicepresident@ gmail.com.

Reminders:

Community Support is ALWAYS Needed! – You can’t see yourself as a firefighter? Can’t commit to a Board position at this time? That’s OK! We still need you!   Mico VFD is always in need of folks to help out with community activities. Can you help set up tables? Break them down and put them away? Can you pick up an extra case of bottled water or Gatorade, and drop it off as a donation for the firefighters to stay hydrated? Do you know of companies, organizations, or individuals who are willing to donate funds, drinks, or items for auction? See, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities that will help the community that doesn’t take a ton of time. Just keep us in mind! Thanks.

Business Meetings – The Mico VFD Business meetings are every second Tuesday starting at 7:00 pm.  The meetings are open to the public and held at the fire station (7121 County Road 271).  You are encouraged to come and participate – we need your voice.

Membership Benefit – Members of the Mico VFD select Board Officers to oversee the department.  Your attendance at the meetings is critical to who is nominated and elected to serve a two-year term on the Board Directors.

Message from the Fire Chief

Hello Mico Neighbors,

Ever thought about being a first responder and directly helping your own neighbors and community? Mico Fire has a small, dedicated cadre of firefighters.  We are in great need of folks to help sustain our ranks.  The critical service cannot be done without volunteers living in our Mico community.  Applicants 18 years and older are highly encouraged to come and experience the rewards of volunteering.  The training is free and will build confidence, skills, and your resume. Please spread the word; volunteers are needed in all capacities.  Contact the Chief to talk about all of the rewarding opportunities a(210) 376-7832 or email mico.firechief@gmail.com.

Thank you – Mico Fire Chief
